They are both new players, so I tried to guide them as much … WebIt's doable with two, you tend to need retainers or NPC party members to make up the mechanical numbers (otherwise you're sometimes missing key skills). It depends a lot on the players though, if they can riff off each other's ideas and enjoy themselves, two players and a DM is fine.
