WebbThis was the first U.S. musket that used the percussion cap ignition system. Approximately 250,000 arms of model 1842 were produced from 1844 to 1855. The model 1842 was the standard arm of the U.S. infantry prior to 1855. At the outbreak of the Civil War thousands of these arms were stored in U.S. and state arsenals.
